1. Brian - 12 May 2011

1. Falkner’s writing style is very wordy and descriptive with detail

2. She might not be married, or she may of gotten divorced recently.

3. Vengeance, since it reared it’s ugly head quite a bit, and it showed a real dark side
about the father and how he treated his son.

4. I pity the boy the most, since his entire family went against him during the middle of the story, especially his father.

2. Katelyn P. - 12 May 2011

1. What’s unique about Faulkner’s writing style is that he uses large amounts of vocabulary to give information about a scene, plus the fact that, if we wrote it, it would be considered run-on sentence structure.

2. The reason is maybe that she has no where to go other than being with her sister, or she isn’t married yet, so she can’t make a family of her own yet.

3. ‘Influence of Fathers’ shows up more, because the boy needs to decide by the end to run off on his own or stay with his abusive father and difficult family. Plus the fact that the boy needed to either choose to ally with his father, or the law, and his father was teaching him to protect his kin (family).

4. I pity the boy the most because he didn’t deserve to be treated in such a way by the father, even if the father had a hard life. There was no reason for them to move so many times and the father to act that way to make the father’s family life more difficult. There could have been so many chances that they were given to make the story come out that the family would live happy lives. However, the father picked to live a rough style with rage against others and revenge.

3. Ethan R-C. - 12 May 2011

1. What is unique about Faulkner’s writing style is that he is very wordy.

2. The reason why Ms.Snopes probably lives with them is because she can’t find a husband. Another reason is because she can'[t get a job and is poor.

3. The theme that becomes the most important is moral responsibility, because if the kid didn’t choose to tell the guy his barn is burning, many people could have died.

4. The kid, because he was forced to go up against his father, even though it was his own family.

4. ??? - 12 May 2011

1. What is very unique about his writing style is that he uses many different words.

2. To help the family out with the kids, or she doesn’t have any money to live on her own.

3. The most important theme in the story is “morals”, because if he didn’t tell the guy his barn was on fire and burning down he would have died.

4. The little boy, because he had to go through a lot at such a young age throughout the story.

5. Nick S. Per. 1 - 12 May 2011

1.What’s unique about Faulkner’s writing style is that he is really wordy. Also, he has a lot of run-on sentences in his writing style.
2. The first reason is Lennie’s sister is poor and doesn’t have anyone else. Also, Lennie’s sister wants to help the family and keep it in line.
3.The theme “influence of fathers on their sons” because the father teaches the boy bad decisions, and the boys look up to Mr.Snopes.
4.S arty, because he knows when there are bad decisions, and he doesn’t like to make them.

m.p.s - 10 June 2011

m.p.s
i disagree with your part one becuase he has a way to put an exact feel to Southern culture in his writing.

6. mr - 12 May 2011

1. Williams is unique with his style because he is wordy with his work; he has a lot of run on sentences.

2. the sister is poor and doesn’t want to have to travel all the time, and the sister doesn’t want to deal with Mr. Snopes.

3. the theme “influence of fathers on their sons” rises about others because the father teaches the son a lot about responsibilities that he shouldn’t, and he teaches him bad decisions.

4. I pity Mr. Snopes because he’s a bad influence, and I believe you shouldn’t hit a kid.

m.p.s - 10 June 2011

Mr. I agree with you, because when Mr. Snopes hit his son he wasn’t teaching discipline, he was teaching his son that it is OK to strike or hit someone.

7. djb - 12 May 2011

1.) His writing style is long and he uses different and more advanced words throughout his writing.
2.) She doesn’t have a husband, to help and protect her from Mr.Snopes
3.) I think moral responsibility was above the rest, because even though Colonel Sartoris loved his family and feared his dad, he still went to warn Major De Spain that Snopes was burning his barn.
4.) I pity Sartoris the most, because of his father being such a bad father.

Nick S - 10 June 2011

1. I agree with Sartoris because his father wasn’t a father and he was always being mean to him.

SJB - 10 June 2011

D♥J♥B
I agree fully with your first comment. His writing style is really unique; not many people have that kind of outlook. His use of vocabulary is very advanced

8. Natasha W. - 12 May 2011

1.Faulkner’s writing style was unique because no one thought like him and did things he did.
2.Mrs.(Lennie)Snopes’ twin sister might be living with Mr.Abner Snopes’ family because she thought she would have a better life style there and maybe thought it wouldn’t be that much of a struggle for her because she wouldn’t be living on her own.
3.Revenge because Major De Spain got back at Mr. Snopes when Mr. Snopes went to Major De Spain’s house and ruined the carpet when he walked on it because he had horse dung on the bottom of his shoe, so Major De Spain took the carpet and took it to Mr. Snopes house, dumped it in front of the door, wanting it back the way it looked when Mr. Snopes first arrived.
4.Major De Spain because he doesn’t take anyone for granted and treats people the same way he gets treated.

9. m p s - 12 May 2011

1. what is unique about Faulkner’s writing style in “Barn Burning” is that even though the story is in the 3rd person, he still shows the thoughts of his characters.
2. some reasons she might be living with the family are either because she is poor, or because Abner’s wife is afraid of Abner and is looking to her sister for her support.
3. on theme in this story, it is morals, because in the end, when Abner burnt Mister de Spain’s barn, the son ran to Mister de Spain and told him.
4. in the story I pity Colonel Satoris because he was in a tough situation between doing what is right and the influence of his father. If he didn’t do what his father wanted, he would be abused – but if he didn’t do what he wanted, his conscience would eat at him.

10. Dalts - 12 May 2011

1. Faulkner’s writing style in Barn Burning is, in my opinion, poetic, moving, ambiguous, and compressed.
2. Two of the reasons that the sister lived with them might be because they didn’t have much money, or that the sister was afraid, and they needed support from each other.
3. I think that vengeance is the worst theme, because he had anger toward Mr.Harris, and burnt his barn down.
4. I pity Colonel Sartoris Snopes because he couldn’t have a normal life because his dad always messed things up, and he beat him so that he was afraid to stand up to his dad.

11. s.j.b - 12 May 2011

1. William Faulkner’s writing style is unique because he uses more advanced and bigger words. He writes in run on sentences.
2. Two reasons why Mrs. Snope’s twin sister lives with them is because she could be poor, or she has no friends.
3. The theme that best fits the story is ‘influence of fathers on their sons’, because the father was all cocky and didn’t really follow the rules, so in turn the sons didn’t want too either.
4. I pity the most in the story the father, mostly because he has a family to take care of and he always struggles.

12. B.W. - 12 May 2011

1. William Faulkner’s style of writing is to use long run-on sentences; words or terms that are not spoken every day, and the use of large words.

2. She is probably living with them because she is poor and has no money for a place to live, or there is no where else to go.

3. I would have to say that vengeance is above the others, because burning someone’s barn down is a serious thing, and the guy was warned that his barn was gonna get toasted, and this is more serious than socio-economic struggles, influence of fathers on their sons, or moral responsibility.

D.B - 10 June 2011

I think the same thing.

13. R.V. - 12 May 2011

It is interesting about his writing style, because he uses run-on sentences and keep going; it could even be in separate sentences, but he puts it in one entire sentence and it is also complicated.
Back in those days the twin sister wouldn’t survive on her own, so she stayed with her family to survive, and it’s really hard to get a job out there, too.
I really believe that vengeance rises to the top, because Mr. Snopes would do anything to gain vengeance on people like – it’s like he is fighting his own war against everybody, but the only thing is that he starts the tension between people.
The boy, because he wasn’t strong enough to stop him, and he gets abuse a lot, which isn’t right either. The father is controlling, because he even uses the boy’s mom to hold him and tie him to a chair, even though he got away. He was tired of this, so he is running to be free.

14. M.W - 12 May 2011

1.He uses really long sentences and he does not use everyday words.

2.Her twin sister could be living with them because she has no one else to live with. Also, maybe they want to stick together; she could be helping around the house and with the children.

3.Vengeance, because he burnt down Mr. Harris’ barn for taking his pig and charging him to get it back.

4. Colonel Sartoris Snopes, because his dad hits him and is always telling him what to do and he doesn’t want to.

kolby r - 10 June 2011

I agree with you Matt W.

15. K. Rogers - 12 May 2011

(1) his writing style was that he put many shorter sentences together into one long sentence and he used big words.
(2) For Mrs. Snopes’ sister to live with them was common back then, and she probably had nowhere else to go.
(3) vengeance, because first Snopes would do something bad to a neighbor or someone he meets, then they go and ask for a fair compromise to fix the problem, and then he would burn their barn down.
(4) I pity the youngest son of Snopes, because he has no one to go to from his father, because his aunr, his mother and his brother all support the father.

Brian V. - 10 June 2011

@ K. Rogers I like the detail you added toward your explanations; it’s better then responses I usually read or hear from; some people who state what they think do it very blandly.

16. J♥E - 12 May 2011

1) He is very wordy. He describes things a lot by giving detail.
2) She doesn’t want to deal with Mr. Snopes. She doesn’t want to travel.
3) Vengeance. Because at the end, he tries burning the other guys barn.
4) Mr. Snopes, because he hits his son.

17. JD - 12 May 2011

1. The author in “Barn Burning” uses complicated vocabulary, very wordy.

2. Reasons why Mrs. Snopes twin sister may be living with Mr. Snopes family are: because she is poor, and because she doesn’t want to travel.

3. I think that the theme that rises above all the others is tension; the reason I chose tension is because Mr. Snopes gets on many peoples’ nerves and doesn’t know how to stay out of everyone’s way.

4. I pity Mr. Snopes the most, because he hits his son and and doesn’t treat him right.

18. Alexandria B. - 12 May 2011

1. The unique part of his writing style is that he uses words that indicate more than just the description of the characters’ feelings and problems throughout the short story.
2. She might be living with Mr. Abner Snopes because she doesn’t have the capability of living on her own, and because she’s trying to help her sister.
3. I think influence of fathers on their sons is above all, because sons tend to look up to their fathers; if the father is doing something wrong, they’re going to see it right in their eyes and follow in his footsteps.
4. The son, because he knew what his father was doing was wrong and knew that if his father got caught, they would either have to move or they wouldn’t have anymore sympathy for his father.

19. Christina - 17 May 2011

1) What is unique about Faulkner’s writing style is the words he uses and how he puts it into a sentence.
2) Two reasons why Mrs. Lennie Snopes twin sister might be living with Mr. Snopes could be because she never married and had nowhere to go, or her husband died and her sister and Mr. Snopes took her in to help take care of her.
3) Vengeance is one of the themes in this story. I think it rises above the others because it is most of the story. Mr. Snopes whipped poop on the rug and had to clean it up.
4) I pity the youngest boy the most because his father, in my opinion, abuses him. He has the boy go with him to all the places like court, or to talk to the new landlord. He even had his wife hold him back so he could go burn down the landlord’s house. He even slapped the boy. I feel sorry for the youngest boy the most.
