1. I do believe the narrator is suffering from an inferiority complex because when he meets Lucy he lies about who he is. Also he doesn’t have the courage to tell her who he is and how he likes her.
2. The narrator’s take on being a swipe is that he liked it. He would have rather have been a swipe than rich.
3. I think the life of a swipe wouldn’t be innocent or uncomplicated, because you would face some problems like he did when he lied about his identity.
4. The result on the narrator’s misplaced emphasis is that he said he didn’t like the rich, but he goes and acts like he’s rich.
5. Over spring break I was in Myrtle Beach with my friends. We all lied to girls saying we were older and freshmen at ECU. It ended up working, and we hung out with many girls there and had a good time.

1. No, I do not think the character is suffering from an inferiority complex on his journey to maturity and self knowledge. I think that he knows his place in the society around him; therefore he takes it upon himself to explore the “rich” society.

2. The narrator’s take on the life of a swipe is average; he deals with it, yet everyone wishes they had a richer life; in his case he likes being a swipe only because he knows that’s the most he can be.

3. No. I do not think that a life of a swipe is innocent, honest, and uncomplicated, because you still have a lot to care for and a lot at stake, especially if you mess up in the actions you take.

4. The result in the narrator’s misplaced emphasis on life is that his thought of rich people is a nearly small to what they really are – not realizing that when he bet on something such as ‘About Ben Ahem’, he would have not only encouraged the gentleman he was with to bet, but the young girls as well.

5.Yes, and the truth ended up coming out in the end anyway.

1. the narrator is suffering from an inferiority complex on his journey because he didn’t have enough courage to ask Lucy out, and he was trying to be like everyone else.
2. the narrator takes on being a swipe; that was what he liked.
3. I don’t think that life is innocent, honest and uncomplicated; life isn’t all that easy; you go through troubled situations which aren’t easy to solve.
3. the narrator’s misplaced emphasis on the wrong things in life is to lie; once you say a lie, you have to keep bringing up more lies to go along with what you’re saying so you don’t look like a fool.
4. I have found myself presenting something short of the truth, when I want to go places with people, or saying I’m going one place, but going somewhere else. Nothing really happens because noone finds out

4. evan s. - 12 May 2011

1. The narrator suffered from an inferiority complex on his journey to maturity and self knowledge, because he thinks that he can’t ask a girl out or talk to them.

2. The narrator’s take on life as a “swipe” is that he enjoyed it, because he was given the chance to travel around the country. He had a lot of opportunites to meet many new people.

3. His life was complicated, because he travels a lot and he doesn’t have a stable home life; he was never in one place for a long period of time.

3. The narrator’s result was the displaced emphasis on the wrong things in life, like being rich and high class. His sister wanted to go to college and he didn’t even care, because he just cared about being a swipe.

4. I think everyone presents something short of the truth in order to gain social approval; not everything that everyone says is exactly true in exact detail.

5. TJD - 12 May 2011

1.yes, he is, because he had to learn lessons of life the hard way.
2.he likes being a swipe; he said he likes being a swipe better than being rich and snobby.
3.I think being a swipe could be innocent and uncomplicated, but sometimes it could be complicated.
4.the result is that he acted rich and snobby; he said he didn’t like that, but he acted like that and lied to people and it bit him back.
5.no

1/ I do not think the narrator is suffering from any inferiority complex. In fact, I would say that he just doesn’t like people showing that they are wealthy anyway, not because he himself is poor. If he was suffering from that condition, then he would probably not enjoy his life as he does. He just realizes that people can have a better condition than he does, and makes fun of them because they are different from him. If he felt inferior, then he would not affirm that he loves working with horses.

2/I think the narrator enjoys his job with the horses and also enjoy the fact of having a free day per week that he can use at his willing.

3/I think the life of a swipe, in this time period, must have been very interesting. They got to meet important people and to take care of horses, and for anyone that actually likes working with animals, it must be a great time. The swipe’s life is probably not very complicated, as they probably have a daily routine that doesn’t really change, and it probably is innocent because they live in the world of horse races and don’t really care about the rest of the world.

4/ The narrator really makes a mistake by thinking badly of rich people and then trying to act as one. As a result, he starts developing a lie that gets bigger and bigger until the point when he cannot change it anymore, and then he is victim of his own lies. He could have done a semi-truth by telling that he was working with the horses so he knew them well, and that would have worked too.

5/No. I have always been honest with myself, for my own good and for my relationships with others.

7. mjc - 12 May 2011

1. The narrator suffered from an inferiority complex because he didn’t think he could ask out the girls or even talk to them.

2. The narrator’s take on the life of a swipe is that he liked it. He liked it because he was able to travel around the country. He liked meeting new people. People from different cities would greet him kindly and hand him drinks.

3. No, because he travels a lot and his life was not stable. He lied about who he was to the a girl named Lucy that he met. He was never in one place for a long time.

3. The narrator’s result on the misplaced emphasis on the wrong things in life is that he sees the wrong things in life, like being rich and high class. He also left his sister who wanted to go to college because his mind was set on being a swipe.

4. I think everyone lies about something to gain social approval. Everyone stretches the truth in some way. If someone is insecure about their own truth, they are obviously going to lie a little.

8. Susan A - 12 May 2011

1. I believe that the narrator was suffering from an inferiority complex because he didn’t break out of his shell, and hasn’t really talked to any girls. He has not matured to the age that he is, and he still acts like a teenager.
2. He likes the life of a swipe because he can travel all around and meet new people. He also likes it because when he goes into new cities, they would great him nicely and give him drinks.
3. I would find that life of a swipe nothing but complicated – not uncomplicated or honest. I would really hate to be going from place to place and non-stop traveling. I would not be able to leave my family and barely see them at all. Also, I’m not a big fan of horses, so that would not be the life that I would chose for myself.
3. He sees the wrong things in life, such as being rich as a rich person. He also left his sister, who wanted to go to college, not able to do so because he thought becoming a swipe was more important.
4. I told a lie last year about being sick to my mom so that I could stay home and sleep, and watch a marathon of my favorite t.v show.

9. EPS - 12 May 2011

1. The narrator suffered from an inferiority complex because he didn’t think he had the courage to go and talk to other girls and ask them out.

2. The narrator’s take on life as a swipe is that he enjoyed it; he enjoyed it because he got to travel all around the country; he liked to meet new people from different cities.

3. No, because he travels a lot, and his life is not stable; he never stays in one place for a long period of time!

3. The narrator’s result with the misplaced emphasis on the wrong things in life is that he sees the wrong things like being rich and in the higher class; he also just up and left his sister who wanted to attend college, but he didn’t even care, all he was worried about was being a swipe.

4.I think everyone lies about something to gain social approval; they stretch the truth in some way.

10. Michelle C - 12 May 2011

1.Yes, I do believe that the character is suffering from “inferiority complex” on his journey to maturity; he was only 19 and he had a hard time trying to find a girl that had everything that he wanted in a girl. It was hard for him to find what he wanted, and when he did find her, he had to let her go.

2.The narrator’s “take” on life was that everything was going good for him and people were kind to him in other cities, and he was craving attention from people but not in a bad way. He wanted to be noticed, but did not want to be a huge deal.

3.I would find that life honest, because when you lie, it gets you no where, and if you are looking for something good in life, you won’t get far unless you are honest about it.

4. A result of the narrator’s misplaced emphasis was that nothing had bothered him about what was going on. When his sister went off to college, he didn’t care about it or about him going himself.

5. One time someone told my teachers that I was skipping school and going to the mall; instead I was actually home sick. They misunderstood what I had said the previous day when I said, “I don’t want to go to school, but instead I want to go to the mall.” The thing is that kids start to get others in trouble. What they say about others intends to come right back and bite them.
